1901 Lithograph by Howard Chandler Christy - "It is Not Only the Bullets that Wound"
Vintage framed color lithograph. Large 1901 Howard Chandler Christy print created by The Grignard Litho Co titled "It is Not Only the Bullets that Wound". The scene depicts the vision of a beautiful woman and military man situated around a campfire. The soldier has obviously just gotten a "Dear John" letter from his sweetheart and is reflecting upon its contents, hence the title. The depiction has a reverent tone which is enhanced by the fact that he sits off on his own away from his colleagues who are gathered socially around the fire in the background engaged in revelry. Vintage print is set behind fine matting in a beautifully carved wooden frame.
The lower left hand corner has "Howard Chandler Christy 1901". The very bottom of the lithograph has "copyright 1901 Charles Scribners Sons N.Y.", "It Is Not Only the Bullets That Wound", and "The Grignard Litho. Co., N.Y."
Howard Chandler Christy' was one of America's most distinguished illustrators, whose work, like that of Norman Rockwell, successfully captured the pulse of the nation.
His career was established when he worked for Scribner's and Leslie's Weekly doing illustrations of American troops in Cuba during the Spanish American War. After that, he was most sought after for his sumptuous, lush portraits of women, although he also painted other notables that included President Calvin Coolidge, General Douglas McArthur, Eddie Rickenbacker, Douglas MacArthur, Amelia Earhart, Herbert Hoover, and Benito Mussolini.
A great addition to your eclectic home decor, this would make a great birthday or housewarming gift.
