DESCRIPTION

Antique Dr Henry D Cogswell Temperance coin. Struck by R & H company from aluminum metal which is 1000 fine in 1865. Aluminum was extremely expensive to produce in the mid 1800's costing more than gold at the time.

Cogswell was a dentist and pioneering Temperance philanthropist who established cool water drinking fountains for the public across the country believing that with access to fresh cool water people could choose to abstain from alcohol. The obverse side of the coin depicts Cogswell in side profile with his family motto on the reverse. T
