Antique South Western Oil On Board George Stanley 1905 Santa Fe NM Mission Art

  • $ 52500

DESCRIPTION

Antique signed South Western Mission style oil on board art. Painted in 1905 by George Stanley this eye catching oil on board painting depicts what appears to be a monk standing in an opening near a partly ruined cloister looking away from the viewer. Upon closer inspection he appears to be wearing a mask not unlike that of a plague doctor to stave of the putrefaction of death. The soft earth tones are cleverly offset by the dark shadow on the partially ruined cloister in the foreground. Strangely alluring in its subject matter this oil painting has a peaceful serenity which seems to captivate a quiet reflection of time long gone. This is most likely one of the old missionaries in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Signed bottom right: George Stanley 1905

George Stanley was active/lived in Colorado, New Mexico. George Stanley is known for Southwest landscape and Indian genre. He is believed to have come from Colorado before he set up a studio in Santa Fe in 1897 and advertised he would "fill orders for watercolors or oil paintings at his present studio." Following his exhibition he was described as "an artist of much ability, and his sketches of Indians and Mexican life, because of their trueness to nature and perfectness in coloring have gained him more than a local reputation."

A great addition to your eclectic home decor.
