Antique USN Oil on Canvas Painting USS Bear Coast Guard Cutter Jessie A Yandell
DESCRIPTION
Antique USN oil painting on hardened canvas. This antique painting depicts the good ship USS Bear which was a 19th century American Coast Guard cutter moored somewhere in the arctic with penguin spectators looking on. This painting dates from between 1884 when it was purchased by the US government and 1926 when it changed its name to Bear of Oakland. It is thought that the artist was Jessie A Yandell and that this was formerly displayed in the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
The SS Bear was a dual steam-powered and sailing ship built with six inch thick sides which had a long life in various cold-water and ice-filled environs. She was a forerunner of modern icebreakers and had an exceptionally diverse service life. According to the United States Coast Guard the USS Bear is described as "probably the most famous ship in the history of the Coast Guard."

CONDITION
In good condition with small signs of wear and tear. There is a small brown line mark on the white paint which may come off if cleaned (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
