Vintage Framed Signed Harlequin Oil Painting by Abruzzi, Harold Stephenson

  • $ 90000

DESCRIPTION

Vintage oil on masonite painting by Harold Stephenson (1908-1974) aka Abruzzi. Painted in whimsical style reminiscent of Chagall and Picasso it depicts a harlequin with a hat partially in the shadows. On her right is a nude female and the background features a specter like figure hovering pointing to a tree on the left. The bright colors of the harlequin are quite the contradiction with her eyes and the overall theme of this painting. The large expanses of bright yellow and green which dominate the center of the picture are almost iridescent which are neatly encompassed by the dark blues, greens and black of the edging of the painting.

Signed bottom right: ABRUZZI

Born in Bellefontaine, OH on May 14, 1908. Stephenson grew up in Marion, Ohio. In his late teens, he studied in New York City at the Art Students League and National Academy of Design, and continued in Paris at Académie des Beaux Arts. During World War Two he was a combat artist for the U.S. Army and after discharge, settled in Hollywood where he worked for the movie studios and taught at his Benedict Canyon studio. He died there on May 24, 1974.

This would make a great wall hanging for any eclectic home or a great housewarming gift.
