DESCRIPTION

Antique anti alcohol Victorian 19th century copper coin struck for the Temperance movement. The recipient of this anti alcohol medal celebrated five years faithful adherence Temperance Medal Coin for the Here and There Total Abstinence Association. In original presentation box, this was struck by the prestigious firm of J S & A B Wyon of 287 Regent Street, London in 1894. It has never been taken out or named to anyone. This is a rare and extremely well struck temperance movement medal in its original box which is like mint.

Alfred Benjamin Wyon was a medallist. Second son of Benjamin Wyon, brother of Joseph Shepherd Wyon and Allan Wyon. He studied at the school of painting at the Royal Academy; learned die-engraving under his father. From 1865 he was associated with his brother JS Wyon as Chief-Engraver of the Seals, and from 1873 was sole Engraver.

Together with his brother, took over the Wyon family die-sinking business founded by George Wyon in Birmingham in the late 19th century, and renamed it J S & A B Wyon.

Antique Medal measures 2" diameter long by 0.25“ thick and weighs 2.6oz
Box measures 3.5" by 3.5" by 0.75" deep and weighs 4.2oz (with coin)

CONDITION

In excellent condition with a small stain on the b of Abstinence on the back of the medal - I have not attempted to remove this (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description)
