Antique Religious Temperance Movement IOR Order of Rechabites Coin Medal Medallion Joseph Taylor

  • $ 14000

DESCRIPTION

Antique religious Temperance IOR Independent Order of Rechabites coin struck by J Taylor of Birmingham. Stuck in white metal between 1835 and 1885 this ridged medal is beautifully made in high relief. These white metal medallion coins were handed out to members who carried them and used them as a token to inspire others to quit the demon drink. They would pass them out to anyone in need so that each time they were tempted to spend money in a bar they would take the coin out of their pocket and hopefully abstain from purchasing the alcohol. These were also worn about the neck or suspended from a watch chain, hence why most of them have a suspension hole at the top.

Marked on front: Independent Order of Rechabites, The sons of rechab drink no wine or strong drinks, J Taylor BIRM
Marked on back: I was sick and ye visited me, S Matthew 25 C 36

A great addition to your antique religious or temperance collection or a great early holiday gift.
