Antique 19th C French bronze Bacchus sculpture. Made by the famous foundry of Ferdinand Barbedienne in the late 19th century this 12" tall bronze bust of Bacchus (The Roman God of Wine) sits on a black Belgian marble column plinth with an octagonal base. This is a larger version than the 9" Bacchus that usually becomes available.

Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) was a renowned Parisian metal worker, manufacturer and foundry owner. In 1838 he went into partnership with Achille Collas (1795-1859), who had just invented a machine to create miniature bronze replicas of statues. Together they started a business selling miniatures of antique statues from museums all-over Europe. Among the principal artists reproduced by the firm were Antoine Louis Barye and Auguste Rodin.

Without the stand the bronze measures 7" wide by 12" tall and weighs 10lb 6oz

CONDITION

In generally good condition considering age and use. The black marble plinth has some scratches and chips especially at the outer edges (please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description).
