DESCRIPTION

Antique original 19th C oil on canvas artwork. Signed oil painting by 19th century Danish artist Godtfred Rump (1816 - 1880) of an atmospheric street scene at night. The artists view is of a plaza or town square from the side street where there appears to be either a fire or some sort of celebration employing fireworks ( a fire is assumed as there would be evidence of a crowd with celebrating fireworks). The direct source is blocked by the column of the corner building closest to us. The darkness of the night if further intensified by the lack of stars or moon and the slim slivers of light emanating from the upstairs windows on the left hand side building. Moody and atmospheric it intimates energy without actually depicting anything obvious to the eye.

Christian Godtfred Rump was one of the most productive Danish painters of his times. He first painted mainly genre and history works but later concentrated on landscapes.

MEASUREMENTS

The framed painting measures 20" long by 18" wide by 1" deep (canvas is 15" by 13.5") and weighs 3lb 11oz.

CONDITION

The painting is in good condition, and would benefit from a cleaning. There are some creases caused by the canvas frame and a small chip out of the wooden surrounding frame of the painting - please see all pictures as they form part of the condition description.
